President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with Secretary-General António Guterres of the United Nations (UN) on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The meeting addressed regional and global issues.
During the meeting, President Erdoğan stated that they have worked closely with Secretary-General Guterres, whose term of office is nearing its end, on a wide range of issues concerning global peace and security.
Noting that it has once again become evident that Israel does not seek peace in Gaza, and emphasising that settler violence in the West Bank and assaults on sacred sites in al-Quds have further exacerbated the situation, President Erdoğan stressed the need to preserve the basis for a two-state solution.
Pointing out the need to de-escalate tensions in both Iran and Ukraine, President Erdoğan emphasised Türkiye’s efforts to ensure continued commitment to the diplomatic process and added that a regionally driven process could help address the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
President Erdoğan said Türkiye expects all parties to act responsibly to ensure the safety of navigation in the Black Sea, and underlined the country’s concern over commercial vessels being targeted in the region.
President Erdoğan stressed that no proposal that does not recognise the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people on the island would yield results.
Also at the meeting were Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan, Minister of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Murat Kurum, Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, Ambassador Mehmet Güllüoğlu, and Member of the Presidential Board of Agriculture and Food Policies Mehdi Eker.
