The Directorate of Communications organised a roundtable discussion titled "The Road to the 2026 Ankara Summit: Shaping the Future of Euro-Atlantic Security" in Berlin in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).
The Extraordinary Summit of NATO Heads of State and Government, to be hosted by Türkiye, will take place in Ankara on 7–8 July 2026. In the lead-up to the Summit, our Directorate continues to organise events in the capitals of allied countries across Europe. Within this framework, a roundtable discussion titled "The Road to the 2026 Ankara Summit: Shaping the Future of Euro-Atlantic Security" was held in partnership with the Germany-based Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).
The event featured opening remarks by Gökhan Turan, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Berlin; Ambassador Akif Çağatay Kılıç, Chief Advisor to the President on Foreign Policy and Security; Oğuz Üçüncü, Member of Parliament and Member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly; and Dr Mark Speich, Secretary General of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. The participants exchanged views on Türkiye’s approach to NATO and recent international developments. The meeting was moderated by Thomas Volk, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at KAS.
Politicians, bureaucrats, and experts from various organisations attended the meeting at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung premises and discussed NATO's future and Türkiye-NATO relations.
The summit emphasised that, in light of global crises and instability, the NATO Summit to be held in Ankara on July 7-8, 2026, will be a critical turning point in strengthening unity and solidarity among member nations. The meeting also emphasised the significance of strengthening Turkish-German cooperation in a variety of industries, particularly in the defence industry. Given the instability in the international system caused by the Russia-Ukraine War and the rising crisis in the Middle East, it was argued that NATO's security shield for member countries is more important than ever. At the meeting, which also examined Türkiye's perspective on NATO, the military and political contributions made by the country since joining the Alliance, as well as the strategic missions undertaken, were evaluated.
