Burhanettin Duran, the Presidency's Head of Communications, said on Saturday that Türkiye is striving for the establishment of a more just, secure, and stable international order.
Duran emphasised that Ankara supports efforts to improve the UN system.
According to the Directorate of Communications, Duran made this statement in his video message to participants at the panel "The Search for Justice in the International System", which was held by the Directorate at the Turkevi Centre in New York.
The Presidency's Head of Communications stated that, since its inception in 1945, the United Nations has made significant progress towards its core objectives of maintaining global peace and security and promoting international cooperation; however, the current structure of the United Nations falls short of representing today's dynamic and complex world.
Duran added that ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world, particularly in the Middle East, large waves of migration displacing millions of people, the climate crisis, Islamophobia, and ethnic and religious discrimination remain significant challenges to the current international system.
Duran noted that the ongoing tragedy and devastation in Gaza, inflicted by Israel for two years, demonstrated the extent to which the current structure is unjust and distorted. He pointed out that Israel's occupation policies and crimes against humanity highlight the impotence of the United Nations, which has been reduced to a powerless bureaucratic structure dominated by major powers wielding veto authority.
Duran emphasised that the United Nations must be restructured based on the principle of fairness and continued his remarks: "We are guided by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's motto that 'a fairer world is possible' and strive to achieve this on every platform. "We advocate that international institutions and organisations should be restructured based on fundamental principles, such as justice, peace, and stability, rather than the interests of certain countries."
Duran stated that Türkiye’s calls for reform have come to represent the voice of the oppressed, the victimised, and the global conscience.
Duran emphasised that Türkiye would continue to play a pioneering and constructive role in establishing an order centred on justice, security and stability for all, adding that Türkiye supported initiatives aimed at improving the performance of the United Nations system.
