Japan and Türkiye set to expand defence cooperation… Nakatani and Güler launch defence industry dialogue (Japan)

As part of his official visit to Ankara, the Minister of Defence of Japan, Gen Nakatani, met with the Minister of National Defence of Türkiye, Yaşar Güler. An agreement was reached between the two ministers to expand defence cooperation and establish dialogue among defence industry institutions. 

Nakatani's visit marked the first official visit by a Japanese defence minister to Türkiye. During the meeting on August 15, 2025, in the afternoon, Nakatani remarked, "The engagement between the two countries' defence institutions is increasingly growing. I am interested in holding a productive meeting that will further solidify this partnership." 

Güler stated, "We have taken note that Japan's interest in the defence industry is on the rise. I would like to highlight the potential for cooperation in this area." 

The parties mutually acknowledged that the meeting would mark a pivotal moment in defence relations between the two countries. To assess tangible areas of collaboration, the ministers agreed to hold talks at the director-general level. In addition, defence equipment and technological cooperation were addressed. 

During the meeting, the ministers also discussed the security concerns that have arisen as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.
